Human Rights Are Crumbling
http://www.truthout.org/article/human-rights-are-crumbling
Stephane Bussard, Le Temps: "The 1990s marked a significant advance in international justice. The May 1999 indictment of Serbian leader Milosevic was emblematic of the progress achieved in the fight against impunity. The attempt now afoot by certain Security Council members, including France and Great Britain, to torpedo an International Criminal Court trial even before it's launched could very well squander the benefits of the 'moral decade.'"
Huge Increase in Spending on Water Urged to Avert Global Catastrophe
http://www.truthout.org/article/huge-increase-spending-water-urged-avert-global-catastrophe
Juliette Jowit, The Guardian UK: "Countries across the world will have to dramatically increase investment in dams, pipes and other water infrastructure to avoid widespread flooding, drought and disease even before climate change accelerates these problems, experts have warned."
Receding Waters Leave Toxic Mix
http://www.truthout.org/article/receding-waters-leave-toxic-mix
Ian Urbina and Thayer Evans, The New York Times: "The sludge left in homes and on roads as floodwaters recede represents a 'toxic soup' of mud, human waste, asbestos, lead and gasoline that poses serious health risks and must be removed before people return, they said."
Water, Becoming The New Oil
The population, agriculture and industry is consuming a dramatic amount of water in an unprecedented fashion, and the water supply worldwide is limited and reserves are going down fast. Few seem to pay attention to impending disasters. The other critical element is that the water distribution systems that are in use are close to failure mode.
To more than two billion people, fresh, pure water is becoming more valuable than gold.

Amid Health Crisis, More Americans Going Abroad for Care

Mridu Khullar, The Women's International Perspective: "India is, indeed, one of the biggest markets for medical tourism, where tourism companies now offer attractive packages that include treatment with a splendid view of the ocean."
Georgia: Women and Children Last
http://www.truthout.org/article/georgia-women-and-children-last
Angelika Arutyunova, The Guardian UK: "For the past month, women in Georgia who were displaced from Abkhazia during the 1993 conflict have witnessed history moving backwards; everything they lived through 15 years ago is repeating itself."
Drug Label, Maimed Patient and Crucial Test for Justices
http://www.truthout.org/article/drug-label-maimed-patient-and-crucial-test-justices
Adam Liptak, The New York Times: "In November, the Supreme Court will hear arguments about whether Ms. Levine may keep more than $6 million that a Vermont jury ordered Wyeth, a pharmaceutical company, to pay her for failing to warn her adequately about the risks of one of its drugs. The case, the latest in a brisk parade of similar ones, will help define the contours of a signature project of the Roberts court."
