Feature Article

Visits to CAM Practitioners Declining….

On July 30, 2009 the National Center for Health Statistics, an office of the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), released its 2007
report on complementary and alternative medicine in the US.

“On the surface” the report appears quite positive for CAM practitioners, stating that in 2007 adults in the United States spent $33.9 billion out of pocket on visits to CAM practitioners and purchases of CAM products, classes, and materials. A closer review of the data indicates a decline in spending on CAM therapies from 1997 to 2007.

While we have not copied the entire report here, we do find it appropriate to highlight several findings that CAM practitioners would be wise to pay attention to. On the “up-side” of the study, although still only a small fraction of total health-care spending in the United States, CAM expenditures in 2007 constituted a substantial part of out-of-pocket health-care costs, and are comparable to out-of-pocket costs for conventional physician services and prescription drug use. On the “down-side”, the numbers may actually infer that the public is losing confidence in CAM modalities:

Here are some examples:

National Health Statistics Reports Number 18, July 30, 2009

*      Comparison of the 1997 and 2007 surveys suggests that the number of visits U.S. adults make to CAM practitioners has dropped by about 50% since 1997undefined628.8 million or 3,176 visits per 1,000 adults in 1997 (3) compared with 354.2 million or 1,592 visits per 1,000 adults in 2007.

*      Almost two-thirds of CAM costs were associated with self-care therapies such as nonvitamin, nonmineral, natural products; homeopathic products; and yoga. This means that only 1/3 of CAM dollars went toward practitioner visits.

*      The two practitioner groups that had the largest reduction in visits in 2007 compared with 1997 were practitioners of energy-healing therapies and the various relaxation techniques. Together, the drop in visits to these two groups of practitioners accounted for about half of the total decrease in 2007 from 10 years earlier.

*      Approximately twice as many individuals bought a self-help book or other materials to learn relaxation techniques in 2007 as saw a practitioner, suggesting that relaxation techniques are used primarily as self-care.

*      Acupuncturists, a progressively more regulated and professionalized CAM provider group, increased over this same time period, with three times that observed in 1997.

National Health Statistics Reports Number 18, July 30, 2009

Before Acupuncturist “get the big head”, understand that the period 1997 to 2007 witnessed considerable publicity on this modality with increased licensure and insurance coverage, very likely accounting largely for such increase. The good news is that such “flocking” to acupuncture indicates that the public has not lost interest in CAM modalities completely, but money and professionalism is a factor!

  • Some of the highest per-person, out-of pocket costs are associated with visits to practitioners of naturopathy and chelation therapy, while the lowest per-person, out-of-pocket costs is associated with visits to practitioners of chiropractic, osteopathic manipulation therapy and energy healers.
National Health Statistics Reports Number 18, July 30, 2009

National Health Statistics Reports Number 18, July 30, 2009

National Health Statistics Reports Number 18, July 30, 2009

So what does all this mean?

It means that we “have been warned”. The public is spending more money on self-care therapies and products and less on practitioners, and this was before the economy turned down. The money that is being spent on practitioners is flowing largely to those that practice “naturopathy”, relaxation therapies and chelation. Less is going to chiropractors and energy medicine practitioners. If the survey was conducted today the results would likely be much more grim. The application of just a little common sense leads us to the following conclusions:

  • The increased publicity of acupuncture created an increase in business. We propose that this could have been “any” CAM modality, not just acupuncture. We further propose that practitioners “pay attention” to the message here: More publicity!

Actually we have already “highlighted” these truths in our article last year
Self Limiting Medicine ”. It seems we made an accurate “prediction”…
Perhaps it would be a good time to re-visit the message!

  • The fact that more CAM dollars are being spent on self-care therapies and products could mean that the public is simply becoming more educated about self-care, however we propose that the real message here is that they are avoiding the high cost of “out of pocket” practitioner visits, and purchasing largely through the internet. Since we are not likely going to see insurance coverage for CAM anytime soon, we must find ways to make practitioners visits that are not covered by insurance more affordable!
  • Understanding that a key element of the increase in acupuncture dollars is the more “professional image” resulting from increased licensure and insurance acceptance, we would do well to heed this message and work continually toward a more professional image.
  •  The last element of note in the 2007 survey is that the public is spending more dollars on “relaxation” type therapies and products. This simply emphasizes the pursuit of ways to deal with the stress of living in today’s world, but it also gives us insight into what the public will spend money on. Practitioners should consider diversification, or incorporation of “in demand” services either in their own training or in their practice.

So how do we stop that 50% of consumer dollars that
are flowing to on-line vitamin and self help retailers?

National Health Statistics Reports Number 18, July 30, 2009National Health Statistics Reports Number 18, July 30, 2009

Re-visiting the key elements:

v  Emphasis on Publicity - Marketing.

v  Emphasis on Professionalism – Increased Certification/Licensure Standards

v  Emphasis on Affordability – Discount OV cost, Increase supplements sales and self-help Resources.

v  Emphasis on Diversification – Incorporate relaxation therapies into practice.

National Health Statistics Reports Number 18, July 30, 2009

Practitioners would be very wise to “heed” this “head’s-up” and to take immediate steps to make sure their practices are positioned to survive and prosper in the current economy. Shrewd on-line marketers are working very hard to take your profits, and are obviously succeeding. The best way to position yourself and your practice, is to join and participate in the programs offered by WONMP. By doing so you are joining with the combined efforts of many, rather than standing on your own. We are not just researching and reporting, we are taking a pro-active role to make sure members have the tools, opportunities and resources to compete and succeed in today’s economy. You will have an opportunity to learn “first hand” what WONMP is doing to address these issues on November 13, 2009 in Las Vegas, and November 20th in Miami. See below for more information on these upcoming seminars. There will be a very special offer extended exclusively to seminar attendee’s, and we promise you will be sorry you missed this if you don’t attend. Here is a brief overview of what will be announced, and a basic idea of what WONMP is planning to address the issues highlighted in the 2007 CAM report:

  • Marketing: WONMP will launch a highly visible advertising section on the WONMP site and practitioners will have an opportunity to place one of several size listings about their practice. The funds from these listings will be earmarked for a national advertising campaign to bring visitors to the WONMP site, and to your advertisement. This joint advertising program will enable practitioners to bring much more traffic to their ad’s and on to their own personal websites than they could possibly afford individually. It is not easy to pull 1000 new visitors a day to a website, but WONMP has already done that!
  • Professionalism: Unquestionably professionalism comes in-part from the education and training standards that underlie certification and or licensure. To make sure WONMP practitioners “lead the pack” in the field of natural medicine, WONMP is increasing standards for practitioner certification and licensure. WONMP’s certification/licensure program, and overall legal status is currently under review by one of the leading attorneys in the field, and the results of this review along with recommendations for the organization and practitioners will be presented in the two upcoming seminars. If you want to know first-hand about your legal status, join us in Vegas or Miami!
  • Affordability: How would you like to add offer a higher level of service, charge less for office visits as research indicates is essential, and earn even more income at the same time? Being a WONMP practitioner gets you access to this package: More at the upcoming seminar-don’t miss it!
  • Diversification: Diversification means much more than just adding relaxation therapies. If Wal Mart had just added one department to its original hardware store, the name wouldn’t be a household word today. Practitioners are going to have to “do what the big boys do” if they want to compete in today’s business climate. WONMP has an answer and it is simpler than you think. Don’t miss the next two seminars!

We could talk about depleted energy after a long day at work and a bus ride home. There are also issues of food addiction and genetics. Some people are born to struggle with weight all their lives. Talking about punishing the obese addresses none of the underlying causes of this medical epidemic. Treating them like human beings should never go out of style."

Economic Downturn Hits Some Industries, K Street Firms Hard

Washington, D.C., is enjoying the long Labor Day weekend, and the Center for Responsive Politics is no different. But in your leisure time, check out this front-page story by Washington Post reporter Dan Eggen, who uses our research and data in noting Sunday: "In a year when Washington's influence industry should be thriving, with epic battled over health-care and energy legislation, lobbying in many sectors is in marked decline as defense contractors, real estate firms and other companies pull back in a down economy."... http://www.opensecrets.org/news/2009/09/economic-downturn-hits-some-in.html

·         Need more business?  We live in an internet age and business now comes largely from website promotion. If you do not have a website, “get one”, but also keep in mind that a website does little good without web visitors. Web traffic comes from “promotion” of your site, and an important component of such promotion is “linking” your site to high volume traffic sites. We work hard promoting the WONMP website and are now receiving “record” hits daily. We want members to benefit from our hard work and suggest the following: First, add http://wonmp.us/MainNews to your homepage tab ( learn how here) to open every time you open an internet browser. We are continually working on this news page and it is the main source of web traffic. Additionally, Search engines look for high quality links to increase your search engine rankings. Refer a Practitioner – Reduce your annual fee…..

We are willing to bet that you know several other practitioners that are not WONMP members. We are also willing to bet that you would like to reduce your annual WONMP registration fees. So here is the deal: All you have to do is recommend WONMP membership to others, and make sure they contact us with your name so we will know where the referral came from. With every referral that joins at the “Registered Practitioner” or higher, we will credit $10 off your annual fee. If you are a registered practitioner, 10 referrals will pay your annual fee!  Refer 25 practitioners and your $250 DNM or Licensure fee is “paid for the year”…Its “FREE”.

And a closing Prayer…..

Billy Graham's Prayer For Our Nation
"Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance.  We know Your Word says, 'Woe to those who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we have done.  We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values.  We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery.  We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.  We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable.   We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self esteem.  We have abused power and called it politics.  We have coveted our neighbor's  possessions and called it ambition.  We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression.  We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.  Search us, Oh God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free.  Amen!"

Thanks to the contributor that sent us this prayer
